Food Justice Exhibition

July 25-September 24, 2022

This traveling exhibition consists of work by 16 nationally and internationally recognized contemporary artists exploring the dimensions of national and regional food systems, the advocacy for social change, and community well-being, while acknowledging processes rooted in the craft tradition.

Featured Artists: Gavin Benjamin, Jason Forck, George Bowes, Joan Goswell, Holly Hanessian Michael Diaz, Stephanie Herr, Amos Kennedy, Jr., Anna Metcalfe, Jeff Schmuki, Wendy DesChene, Patty Kennedy Zafred, Xena Ni, Mollie Ruski. We’re partnering with the local community to continue education and awareness. Some of our community partners include: Debra Knape “The Garden Sage”, Highland Youth Gardens, Yellowbird Food Shed, Food Rescue, City of Columbus Mobile Food, Jenny Fusco with Howard Hanna Realtors, & Tabouli Café Food Truck.

Opening Reception Thursday, July 28, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Meet representatives from community organizations during the reception: Highland Youth Gardens, Yellowbird Foodshed, Food Rescue US, OSU Extension-Franklin County, and CRPD Food & Nutrition. The Tabouli Café Food Truck will be onsite and serving delicious Mediterranean dishes!

Workshops

In conjunction with the Food Justice exhibition, we are offering two hands-on workshops with horticulture expert Debra Knapke, “The Garden Sage” a frequent guest of WOSU’s All Sides with Ann Fisher. Sponsored by Jenny Fusco, Howard Hanna Realtors.

Lunch & Learn

“Food Insecurity” with Michael Hogan

Thursday, August 11 • 12pm–1pm
Free
Michael Hogan will explore the complex issues of food insecurity and inequity, and food deserts in this free talk. Michael specializes in Sustainable Agricultural and Urban Food System Development at OSU Extension.

**Boxed lunches will be provided by McAlisters Deli. If food allergies are a concern, we recommend bringing your own lunch.

The Sustainable Garden Series with Debra Knapke

The Sustainable Garden Described

Thursday, September 1 • 6:30pm–8:30pm

In this fun and educational talk, gardening expert Debra Knapke will explore the myths and realities of sustainable gardening and maybe, just maybe, realign your thoughts about what it is to be “sustainable.” Fee: $30.

The Sustainable Garden Designed: Wildlife Gardening (Hands-on)

Thursday, September 8 • 6:30pm–8:30pm

In this hands-on workshop with gardening expert Debra Knapke, participants will learn the essentials of creating a garden that supports insects, birds and other wildlife, along with the needs of humans. Fee: $35; includes supplies.

Debra Knapke, the Garden Sage, has been intuitively gardening for years. Her design and consulting business focuses on herbs and gardens. Her own garden consists of 26 different areas. She holds a master’s in horticulture, a master’s in speech/language pathology, and a bachelor’s degree in speech and hearing science, with a minor in vocal music performance from The Ohio State University. She is a frequent guest on WOSU’s All Sides with Ann Fisher.

Intersection of Art & Science

with Marcia Armstrong

Columbus artist Marcia Armstrong will discuss her current work, as well as the exciting intersection of art and science.

The organization owns and operates the Ohio Craft Museum in the Grandview Heights area and has organized Winterfair in Columbus for over 45 years.
